Manuka Honey UMF15+ vs UMF10+: What the Rating Actually Means

Most consumers buying manuka honey in Singapore have no idea what UMF actually measures. The good news: once you know, you can never be tricked again.

The three ratings you'll see

  1. UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) — the New Zealand-controlled certification mark. Measures three signature compounds: methylglyoxal (MGO), dihydroxyacetone (DHA), and leptosperin. UMF15+ is genuine high-grade manuka.
  2. MGO — measures only methylglyoxal. UMF15+ corresponds roughly to MGO 514+. UMF20+ is around MGO 829+.
  3. KFactor — measures pollen content. Not regulated. Doesn't indicate antimicrobial strength.

If a jar shows only KFactor and no UMF or MGO number, walk away.

What UMF15+ does that lower grades don't

  • Measurable antimicrobial activity in lab studies — strong enough to support gut and respiratory health.
  • Higher MGO concentration means better preservation (real manuka doesn't go off).
  • The cost premium is real. UMF15+ takes longer to harvest and certify.

Frequently asked questions

Is UMF20+ worth the upgrade? For most daily users, UMF15+ is enough. UMF20+ is targeted at acute use (winter months, recovery from illness).

Can children take it? Yes, after 12 months old. Below 12 months, no honey of any kind.

Does it lose potency over time? Manuka is unusually stable. A sealed jar holds its activity for years.
