Halal Health Supplements in Malaysia: How to Check, and What We Certify

What Halal certification on a supplement actually means
For Malaysian shoppers, a Halal mark on a supplement is not a general wellness badge. It certifies that ingredients, processing aids, manufacturing and handling meet Islamic requirements, verified through an audit of the supply chain rather than a self-declaration by the seller.
In Malaysia the recognised authority is JAKIM, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia, which also recognises a list of approved foreign certification bodies. This matters for imported supplements, which most premium wellness brands are.
Why supplements are harder than food
Supplements carry ingredients that are easy to overlook:
- Capsule shells. Standard gelatin capsules are frequently bovine or porcine derived. Vegetarian capsules use HPMC or pullulan instead.
- Marine collagen versus other collagen. Fish-derived collagen is generally more straightforward than bovine or porcine sources, though certification still depends on processing.
- Carriers, glazing and flow agents. Magnesium stearate, glycerin and some coatings can be animal derived.
- Alcohol in extraction. Some botanical extracts use ethanol during processing.
This is why a product being plant based does not automatically make it certified, and why certification is worth more than an ingredient list read at a glance.
Which brands in our range carry Halal certification
We mark a product as Halal-certified only where the brand has issued certification material for that product line. Where no marking appears, we are not making a certification claim, and that absence should be read as absence of evidence on our side rather than a judgement about the product.

How to verify for yourself
You do not have to take any retailer's word for it, including ours.
- Check the certificate, not the logo. A Halal logo is an image; a certificate has a number, an issuing body and an expiry date.
- Confirm the issuing body is recognised. JAKIM publishes both its own directory and its list of recognised foreign certifiers.
- Check it covers the specific product. Certification is granted per product or per line, not to a company as a whole. A brand having one certified product does not certify the rest.
- Check it has not expired. Certificates are renewed periodically.
A note on how we handle this
A Halal marking is a religious certification, not a marketing decoration. We would rather under-claim than over-claim: several products in our range are excellent and simply are not marked here, because we do not hold certification material for them. If you need certainty for a specific product, ask us and we will point you to the documentation or tell you plainly that we do not have it.
