Marine Collagen Benefits: How Much to Take & How to Choose (Singapore Guide)

NTX Wellness · 2026-06-25

Marine collagen has quietly become one of the most-searched wellness supplements in Singapore — and for good reason. Our natural collagen production starts to decline from our mid-20s, and marine collagen offers a highly absorbable way to support skin, hair, nails and connective tissue. But how much should you take, does it actually work, and how do you choose a good one? Here is an evidence-based guide.

What is marine collagen?

Marine collagen is a protein sourced from the skin and scales of fish. It is broken down into short chains of amino acids called collagen peptides (also called hydrolysed collagen), which makes it easier for the body to absorb. Most marine collagen is Type I collagen — the same type that makes up the majority of the collagen in our skin, hair and nails.

Compared with bovine (cow) or porcine (pig) collagen, marine collagen has a smaller molecular weight, which research suggests may support higher bioavailability.

Marine collagen benefits

Clinical research on collagen peptides has grown considerably, and several randomised controlled trials report measurable benefits:

  • Skin hydration and elasticity — randomised trials report improvements in skin moisture and elasticity after 8–12 weeks of daily use.[1][2][4]
  • Skin firmness and fewer fine lines — collagen peptides have been shown to improve skin wrinkling and support the skin's own collagen network over time.[1]
  • Hair and nails — many people report stronger nails and less breakage, though the evidence here is more limited.
  • Joint and connective-tissue comfort — collagen is widely studied for joint support.

A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 trials (1,125 participants) concluded that hydrolysed collagen taken for around 90 days improved skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles compared with placebo.[3] That said, collagen is a supplement, not a medicine, and results vary from person to person — think of it as a consistent long-term habit rather than a quick fix.

How much marine collagen should you take per day?

Clinical trials typically use between 1 g and 10 g of collagen peptides per day, depending on the type. For example, 2.5–5 g of collagen peptides improved skin elasticity over 8 weeks,[2] and a 2.5 g collagen blend improved hydration, elasticity, roughness and density over 12 weeks,[4] while about 1 g of low-molecular-weight (marine) collagen peptide improved hydration, elasticity and wrinkling over 12 weeks.[1] For general skin support, a daily 5–10 g serving of standard collagen powder is common. Marine collagen can be taken at any time of day — stir it into coffee, tea, water or a smoothie. The single most important factor is consistency over 8–12 weeks.

How to choose a marine collagen in Singapore

  • Hydrolysed peptides — look for "hydrolysed" or "collagen peptides" for better absorption.
  • Type I collagen — ideal for skin, hair and nails.
  • Third-party tested — choose brands that test for heavy metals and purity, which matters for any marine-sourced ingredient.
  • Powder vs capsules — powder makes it easy to reach an effective dose and mix into drinks; capsules are convenient but you may need several to match a powder serving.
  • Halal considerations — fish-derived marine collagen avoids pork and beef, so it is often more suitable than bovine or porcine. If certification matters to you, look for a product that states it.
  • Added vitamin C — vitamin C supports your body's own collagen synthesis, and collagen blends that include vitamin C have shown strong skin results.[4]

A note from NTX Wellness

As a registered nurse, my advice is simple: choose a clean, well-tested product, take an effective dose consistently, and give it at least 8–12 weeks. Supplements work best alongside the basics — sleep, sun protection, hydration and enough protein. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a fish allergy, or have a medical condition, please check with your doctor first.

Frequently asked questions

Does marine collagen really work?

A 2021 meta-analysis of 19 randomised trials found that daily hydrolysed collagen improved skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles over about 90 days.[3] Results are gradual and vary between individuals.

Is marine collagen good for you?

For most healthy adults, hydrolysed marine collagen is well tolerated, with no treatment-related adverse effects reported in the trials above. It is a convenient way to add Type I collagen peptides and a little extra protein to your routine.

Is marine collagen halal?

Fish-derived marine collagen avoids pork and beef, making it a preferred option for many. If halal certification is essential, choose a product that states it explicitly.

When is the best time to take marine collagen?

Any time that helps you stay consistent. There is no strong evidence that timing matters — daily consistency does.

Can I take marine collagen long term?

Collagen peptides are generally considered safe for ongoing daily use in healthy adults. As always, consult your healthcare provider if you have specific concerns.
